The Lost Umbrella
Reading Passage
Emma was having a terrible day. She had overslept, missed her bus, and arrived at work thirty minutes late. Her boss gave her an angry look but didn't say anything. To make things worse, she had forgotten her lunch at home.
When the workday finally ended, it was raining heavily outside. Emma reached into her bag for her umbrella, but it wasn't there. She must have left it at home too. She stood at the office entrance, watching the rain and wondering what to do.
"Excuse me, do you need an umbrella?" a voice said behind her. Emma turned around and saw a young man she didn't recognize. He was holding a large red umbrella and smiling kindly.
"Oh, I couldn't possibly take your umbrella," Emma replied. "You'll get wet!"
"Actually, I have two," the man laughed, pulling a smaller blue umbrella from his backpack. "I always carry a spare. My grandmother taught me to always be prepared for rain. I'm Daniel, by the way. I just started working on the third floor."
Emma smiled for the first time that day. "I'm Emma. Thank you so much, Daniel. This is the nicest thing that has happened to me all day."
They walked out together into the rain. Daniel told her about his first week at the company, and Emma shared her story about the terrible day she'd had. By the time they reached the bus stop, they were both laughing.
"Same time tomorrow?" Daniel asked with a grin as his bus arrived.
Emma laughed. "I hope I won't need to borrow your umbrella again, but yes — same time tomorrow."
As she sat on her bus home, Emma realized that sometimes the worst days can have the best endings.
